Is coverlet set is designed to be used in summer as blanket & can quilt can replace comforter in winter?

I am so confused in these bedding sets. I don't understand what & when to buy plus the use of it..say do i have put some sheet under coverlet. and use the sheet as blanket and remove the coverlet bcoz its just "show off" stuff?

In the US, there are five main types of decorative bedding covers. You choose one, and then use it as a blanket when sleeping:

1. The decorative comforter. It comes in colors and patterns. A comforter will only cover your mattress--not your box spring or bed frame. It is usually medium-weight. You sleep between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, and the comforter goes on top of the flat sheet. You can place blankets between the flat sheet and the comforter, but you may not need to.

2. The quilt. This is usually light-weight. A quilt will only cover your mattress. You sleep between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, and the quilt goes on top of the flat sheet. In the winter, you will probably need to place blankets between the flat sheet and the quilt.

3. The bedspread. This ranges from light-weight to medium-weight. A bedspread will extend down the foot and sides of your bed to the floor. You sleep between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, and the bedspread goes on top of the flat sheet. You may or may not need to use blankets between the flat sheet and the bedspread, depending on it's weight.

4. The coverlet. This is somewhere in between a quilt and a bedspread. It larger than a quilt, but smaller than a bedspread. Like a bedspread, it may come in different weights. It will probably only cover your mattress. You sleep between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, and the coverlet goes on top of the flat sheet. You may or may not need to use blankets between the flat sheet and the coverlet.

5. The down/down alternative comforter and duvet cover. This is very similar to the type of bedding used in Europe. (There, the comforter is called a duvet. Some people in the US will refer to the duvet cover as a duvet.) The down/down alternative comforter is heavyweight, usually white, expensive, and usually dry clean only. Like a decorative comforter, it will only cover your mattress. Because this type of comforter is so difficult to clean, you will need to buy a removable cover for it, called a duvet cover. Most people in the US would sleep between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet, with the comforter/duvet cover combination on top. Blankets are usually not necessary. People who choose this combination may have different weight comforters that the use for each season. Most people in Europe would sleep between a fitted sheet and the duvet/cover combination. If your duvet cover is 100% cotton, you can chose to skip the flat sheet, as well.

Most people don't have a fall/winter and a spring/summer bedding set. Usually the same set is used year-round. I have a quilt, and usually place blankets under it in the winter. In the summer, I make the bed with the quilt, and then fold down the quilt to the bottom of the bed and sleep just under the flat sheet.
